What are Sticky Keys?
Sticky Keys has been a mainstay accessibility feature in Windows, designed mainly for people with motor disabilities. It’s meant to help folks who have trouble holding down multiple keys at the same time by making the keys “stick” down, letting them be pressed one by one to provide access to the usual shortcuts. However, because the shortcut to enable it is to hit the shift key five times, this can be annoying for gamers or extremely fast typers. In this guide, we’ll go over how to turn off Sticky Keys.
1. Undo Sticky Keys (Quick Method)
This is the fastest, simplest method for anybody who accidentally activated the feature. Follow the steps below:
- Activate the Sticky Keys shortcut by pressing the Shift key five times quickly.
- If Stick Key’s already enabled, then you should hear a sound alert informing you that it’s now disabled.
- Don’t press shift anymore after you hear this sound. If you do, you’ll bring up the Sticky Keys window again.
This method is by far the fastest way to turn sticky keys off, making it the go-to method if you’re in the flow while gaming or typing.
2. Turn Sticky Keys Off Through Settings
The Windows Setting app is the main reliable way to undo Sticky Keys and ensure you fully deactivate the feature.

- Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.
- On the left sidebar, click on Accessibility. This is where you’ll find Sticky keys among other things, like auto voice narration or magnifiers.
- Scroll down and click keyboard.
- Under Sticky Keys, toggle the switch off.
This method lets you skip the shortcuts and popups as well as access additional controls that regulate how Sticky Keys behaves. If you want to permanently stop Sticky Keys, you’ll have to go to the next item on the list.
3. Stop the Sticky Keys Shortcut Permanently
Many users want Sticky Keys to stop completely. While the shift-key shortcut remains active, it’s easy to trigger the feature again by mistake. This can be especially annoying because the window pop-up will disable all inputs until you alt-tab back to the window you were originally on. Disabling the shift-key shortcut itself makes it so Sticky Keys will need to be manually enabled through settings if you ever want to turn it on again. Follow these steps:
- Press Windows + I to open the Settings app. Click on Accessibility, then keyboard.
- Click the Sticky Keys submenu.
- Turn off the option labeled “Keyboard shortcut for Sticky Keys”.

This will completely disable the shortcut from ever activating. It’s permanent until you return to enable it again.
There are other optional settings here that might interest you if you wanted to turn off the Sticky Keys shortcut but still want to utilize it. Here, you can find a special two button modifier that can toggle Sticky Keys on and off, play a sound when shortcut keys are pressed and released, or display the Sticky Keys icon on the taskbar.
4. How to Deactivate Sticky Keys Using Taskbar Icon
When Sticky Keys are active, it places an icon in the taskbar’s system tray in the bottom right. From here, you can easily access the Sticky Keys menu without having to trawl through the Settings app. This comes with the caveat of needing Sticky Keys to be on, so it’s not great for people trying to avoid activating it in general.

- Check your taskbar in the bottom right of your screen and look for a white square icon with modifier symbols on it. If you don’t see it, you’ll need to click on the arrow key to expand it.
- Left click it once to open the Sticky Keys menu.
- Toggle Sticky Keys off.
This option is useful for if you want to quickly access the Settings app when you’ve already turned Sticky keys on. It is slower than the first method but offers more options.
Deactivate Sticky Keys For Good
Sticky Keys are very useful for some users, but for many, it disrupts basic every day tasks. Thankfully, all the tools are already provided to you by Microsoft. If you accidentally turned it on, you can simply use the shift shortcut to bring it back up and fix it. If you want more permanent solutions, or just simply modify it so it doesn’t get in the way as much. In any case, we hope that this article has helped you with your problem.
