The clipboard is one of the most universal part of any OS. This feature exists from Android to Mac, and is responsible for enabling one of the most useful actions ever – copy, cut and paste. What most people don’t realize is that Microsoft has significantly expanded what the clipboard can do past these basic features. The clipboard on Windows 11 has gone past being a simple basic temporary storage tool and has been changed into a full clipboard history system that can store multiple items, sync across devices, and even preserve frequently used content.
In this guide, we’ll take a deep dive into the clipboard on Windows 11. We’ll go over how you can manage your clipboard history, how to sync clipboard data, and how third-party apps can enhance the experience even further.
What Exactly Is the Clipboard on Windows 11?
At its core, the clipboard is just a simple temporary storage area. When you use Copy or Cut, Windows will store the data inside the clipboard until you paste it (when you cut) or until you replace it by copying something else (when you copy).
Historically speaking with Windows, the clipboard can only store one item at a time, which meant that users would constantly overwrite their copied data by mistake. Windows 11 gets past this limitation with clipboard history, letting the OS retain multiple copied items at a time instead of overwriting them.
With clipboard history, Windows 11 can store:
- Plain text
- Rich and formatted text
- HTML content
- Emojis and symbols
- Images smaller than 4 MB
This makes clipboard a very powerful productivity feature in and of itself instead of just a utility. It’s especially useful if you frequently write, code, edit, or do administrative work where you frequently move information between windows and apps. What’s more is that Windows will automatically create the plain text and rich text version of text, and select between the two depending on what you paste the text into. For instance, if you paste text into Notepad, it will always be in plain text even if you had copied rich text.
How to Enable Clipboard History on Windows 11
Clipboard history is not always active by default, particularly on newer installations. Fortunately, enabling it is very simple and only takes a few seconds. Follow these steps to turn on clipboard history:
- Press Windows + I to open WIndows Settings.
- Select System
- Click Clipboard
- Toggle Clipboard history to On

Once enabled, Windows 11 will immediately begin saving copied items in the background. Alternatively, you can turn it on by trying to open clipboard history while it’s disabled by pressing Windows + V and then turning it on from there. This approach is faster as you avoid navigating through menus.
If you’re still on Windows 10, don’t worry. You can follow these steps to get the same result.
How to Open Clipboard on Windows 11
As we just went over briefly, you can open the clipboard history interface by pressing Windows + V. This shortcut opens a floating clipboard panel that displays your most recent copied items in a vertical list. Each item is interactive, so you can click it to paste immediately into the active window.
This panel will stay open until you select an item or click elsewhere, allowing you to review and choose exactly what you want to paste. Once you get used to this shortcut, it will become second nature.

One of the biggest advantages of this window is that it’s system-wide. You can access it no matter what kind of application you’re in. For instance, you can:
- Copy text from a web browser
- Alt Tab to Notepad or Word.
- Press Windows + V
- Select any previously copied item on the list.
You can do this with pretty much any app that supports text input. Variosu productivity apps, coding editors, or even video game text inputs all support this feature.
How to Pin Clipboard Items in Windows 11
Pinning is an understated, but powerful clipboard feature. By pinning copied items, Windows will keep it permanently available. This means that the items you copied will stay even after you restart your computer or clear your clipboard history.
To pin a certain item, just open the menu with Windows + V and hover over the item and click on the pin icon. Once you do, they will stay pinned and prioritized until you unpin it.

How to Clear Clipboard on Windows 11
Clearing your clipboard history every once in a while is important. It’s your go-to solution for any glitchy problems that may arise. Plus, clearing your data every once in a while is a great way to preserve your privacy and security. Companies can’t collect data that isn’t there, after all.
To do this, simply press Windows + V and click Clear all. This will remove all unpinned items immediately. Alternatively, restarting your PC or signing out of your Windows account will also automatically clear clipboard history.
How to Sync Clipboard Across Devices
In an effort to bring everything into the same ecosystem, Microsoft has included built-in clipboard syncing using your Microsoft account. Yes, even the clipboard on WIndows 11 is in the cloud now. This feature lets you copy something on one device and paste it on another.

To enable clipboard sync, simply go to your settings menu by pressing Windows + I, then navigate to System and Clipboard. Enable Sync across your devices and choose between automatic or manual sync. Automatic will sync your clipboard to the cloud as you add things, while manual is more secure because it lets you choose which items to upload to the cloud.
Clipboard-Enhancing Apps for Windows 11
While Windows’ built-in clipboard history is excellent, it still has its limitations. For instance, it only lets you save 25 items at a time and lacks features such as deep search, tagging, automation, or long-term archival past just pinning. More advanced users may find that they need more control, storage, and organization. Clipboard manager apps can help fill those gaps. Below are some of our recommendations.
Ditto Clipboard

Ditto is considered a gold standard of clipboard managers on Windows. It doesn’t try to supplant the native Windows clipboard because it just runs quietly in the background and enhances all its features instead.
Every time you copy something, Ditto saves it into a searchable database. Unlike the native Windows 11 clipboard history, Ditto doesn’t have a hard item limit, meaning you can keep thousands of clips indefinitely. When you want to access these clips, you can access Ditto using a customizable keyboard shortcut that opens a searchable list of past clips.
Another key feature of Ditto is its search capabilities, meaning that you won’t get lost in the metric ton of clips that you’ve been saving. And for those who are truly obsessed with optimization, it’s able to be operated completely with the keyboard.
There are some downsides, of course. For instance, the interface is extremely basic and focused on function over form. There’s also no built-in text editing tools or any automation past it automatically saving anything you copy.
Ultimately, though, Ditto is still one of the best choices around for upgrading the clipboard on Windows 11.
ClipClip

ClipClip is a more feature-rich clipboard manager for your computer that goes past simply storing all the clips that you’ve had. It also features organization tools that let you save these clips to different folders. That means that instead of scrolling through a giant list of clips, you can actively manage and categorize your clips to turn it into a structured content library.
Another feature it boasts is OCR. OCR is a feature that lets you copy paste text that’s in PDFs or other images, making it effective for copying text from scans of documents. It also boasts a number of translation and formatting tools, and an interface that’s easy to understand.
There are a few downsides, just like with anything else. ClipClip is much more resource intensive than Ditto is, due to the need to run so many functions. It also doesn’t exactly operate in the background, and it demands a space on your screen in order to function properly. There being so many features also makes it overkill for users that simply want a search function.
That being said, ClipClip is still one of the most powerful clipboard managers available on WIndows 11.
Pasteboard

Pasteboard is a clipboard manager that sits somewhere between the previous two in terms of complexity. Just like Ditto, it operates quietly in the background and only pops up when you want to access its content.
It also takes a couple of notes from ClipClip. For instance, it features a searchable history and the ability to rename and favorite certain clips to help organize it a little bit. However, that’s about as far as it goes. In terms of pure features, it has less than ClipClip across the board. It also has limited automation and has a lot less customization for power users.
If you want a program that cleanly straddles the line between complexity and function, then Pasteboard is a fantastic option.
Using the Clipboard to Boost Productivity
The clipboard on Windows 11 is such a powerful tool that many people don’t know about. Its wide range of features is able to cover any everyday user’s needs, especially because it’s part of Microsoft’s ecosystem and synergizes with the default Windows apps well. However if that’s not enough for you, then there are a couple of clipboard apps that might serve you better.
Ditto can provide you with a direct upgrade to your clipboard without completely taking over your clipboard. If you need something more powerful, then ClipClip will be there to give you all the features you need (and more). If you want something that’s in the middle ground, then you’ll want to take a close look at Pasteboard. Regardless of what you pick, we hope that this guide has helped you learn more about the clipboard on Windows 11.
